Newgates - where quality clothing doesn't mean breaking the bank

Clothes shopping on a small island can feel a little like looking for an oasis in the desert. It’s hot, frustrating and more often than not eminently fruitless. All the more reason then why Newgates in Heritage Quay – the tourist hub of St John’s – is a serendipitous discovery.

At first glance, one would be forgiven for thinking that the big name apparel - Polo Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein to name a few - would set you back a pretty penny. But with prices up to 40 per cent cheaper than European brand prices, there’s little danger of breaking the bank.

And with winter around the corner, anyone looking to update their wardrobe will be delighted to learn that there are ongoing discounts of up to 60 per cent off selected items. This week saw the eagerly anticipated arrival of Polo Ralph Lauren men’s shoes, along with a suave selection of jackets to keep you warm during the colder months.

Since 1999, Newgates has been decking out its primarily male clientele in uber-cool brand name garb from top to toe. Happily, ladies are not left out thanks to a sprinkling of stylish hand-picked dresses. There is a range of accessories for both sexes, from hats and bags, to belts, socks and underwear.

The shop’s manager Mirna D’Ornellas made Antigua her home more than two decades ago. She describes her team of three Antiguan staff as “friendly, warm and always ready to assist”. She adds: “What sets Newgates apart is that we regularly update our stock; we have new arrivals coming in constantly between November and May. But most of all it’s the quality of our clothes that keeps customers coming back.”
